This agate cameo from the 19th century is of wonderful quality. The profile of an ancient goddess is depicted in a detailed cut, without any attributes that would allow us to assign her to a specific mythological figure. Her expression is calm but natural, her curls rendered by a master's hand in every strand. The sculpturally cut cameo illustrates an ancient ideal of beauty with full hair, a straight nose and even facial features, thus managing to combine sensuality and classical education. The two layers of gemstone used here are a single piece of stone, in which the upper white layer has been engraved in such a way that only the profile bust remains and consequently stands out from the semi-transparent layer of the gray background. The stone carving was probably created shortly after the middle of the 19th century, either in Idar-Oberstein in the Hunsrück or in Paris, where many stone carvers who had emigrated from the Hunsrück worked at the time. The simple silver framing was created in the 20th century and shows a French maker's mark and a silver hallmark from the Paris inspection office. We found this beautiful pendant here in Berlin and added the silver chain.
