The thyrsos (Greek θύρσος, plural: thyrsoi, Latin thyrsus), rarely thyrsos staff or bacchus staff is in Greek mythology a staff carried as an attribute of Dionysus and his companions, the Maenads and the Satyrs. It is said to have consisted of a stalk of the giant fennel. At the top was a crown of ivy or vine leaves, or a pine cone. Here, the staff is made of reddish gold and silver. Sparkling diamonds occupy the top and the end of the staff. Richly detailed and perfectly crafted, we date the brooch to around 1890. But who wore this brooch? What message was it supposed to send? It is certain that already in ancient times jewellery in the shape of the staff was worn by the followers of the Dionysus Mysteries, as a sign of recognition. Thus, even today, the brooch may announce the love of wine, celebrations in the circle of friends and cheerful get-togethers: For to pay homage to Dionysus with a glass of wine, there are never enough opportunities! We reproduce a painting by William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905), the "Priestess of Bacchus". She also carries a thyrsos staff as a distinguishing mark. The painting was sold in 2012 at Sothebys.
