Hand-cut corals from the Mediterranean have always been the pride of southern Italian jewellery makers - and they are now rare jewels from a time when corals still populated the seabed in large numbers and delighted Italian travellers with their unusual colour. Depending on the regions, sea depths and growing conditions, the marine animals form specific shades of colour, such as the deep red Sardegna coral fished around the island of Sardinia or the lighter salmon coral, which was processed especially in the 19th century. The bracelet here is made of three strands of antique Italian coral, which came to us as part of a large old stock from a dealer in Italy. The beads are hand cut, not always full round, but of a selectively beautiful colour, a light shade of salmon. Their cut by hand at the same time guarantees the origin of the coral beads in the years around 1900. We have had the corals re-strung and added an engraved box clasp and the two intermediate pieces of gold-plated silver. This creates a new bracelet using coral that is over 100 years old, reminiscent of sunny days in the south.

Coral has always been attributed mythological properties. The red substance, which the Greeks and Romans already regarded as the most precious of the sea creatures, was used as an aphrodisiac, medicine or even fertiliser. The colour red was equated with vital blood and so the red amulets were supposed to protect against death. The precious corals, which are mainly used to make jewellery, come in a variety of colours. The spectrum ranges from white to a delicate pink, to the much sought-after salmon colour in light and dark shades, to the strong and dark red, which is also known as oxblood. Each coral species has its very own play of colours and this is how the coral species can be distinguished. For a long time there was disagreement as to whether they were minerals or plants, until in the 17th century Filippo Finella identified the polyps that bloom so colourfully in the sea as insects. As we know today, they are cnidarians and the coral we know as jewellery is the skeleton of these.
