Every year in August, Queen Elizabeth II went to Balmoral Castle in the Scottish Highlands for a summer retreat. In doing so, she followed a tradition that has existed since the days of her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria. Together with her husband Albert, she bought the estate in the picturesque Highlands in 1847 and had it magnificently extended. Victoria and her family fell in love with the rugged land in the north of the island and all things Scottish became fashionable throughout the country. Traditional clothing and jewellery were a must for all members of the upper classes who came to the Highlands to hunt and fish. In particular, the colorful semi-precious stones found in the Cairngorm mountains west of Balmoral were used in this jewellery, giving it a local patriotic flavor. This type of jewelry is now known as "pebble jewellery". The clasp on this black glass bead bracelet, made of silver and four granites, was originally part of such "pebble jewellery" from the 1860s. The granites from the Scottish Highlands are connected by a horizontal St. Andrew's cross. The X-shaped cross is part of Scotland's national flag and refers to the national saint St Andrew, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus who was executed by the Romans on such a cross. The glass beads were probably added to the old clasp at some point during the graduated 20th century to make it wearable again. The bracelet came to us as it is here in Berlin. Unexplored Treasures, New York / London / Paris, 1991, pp. 57-95, have compiled numerous other wonderful examples of such pieces in their publication.
