This pair of earrings, which we have put together from individual antique parts, appears unusual. They were based on two elements that probably once belonged to a brooch from the end of the 19th century, which we discovered in London. Our goldsmiths took these elements as a starting point to complete them into elegant earrings. Crafted from silver, these tops hold rose-cut diamonds in sweeping foliage. Each larger diamond rose is individually set in a mirror setting, which in turn is underpinned by a curved leaf. The foils under the diamonds are effectively blackened so that the flat-cut diamond roses appear dark and mysterious. We have attached smooth gagat studs to these elements and complemented them with rose gold earwires. The result is a pair of earrings whose warm sparkle elegantly accentuates the diamonds while tastefully placing the antique elements in a new context.

Jett, also known as "gagat" or "black amber", is a special form of fossilized coal that has been used as jewellery since prehistoric times due to its unique shine and ease of carving. The Romans were already making jewellery and amulets from gagat; from the Middle Ages onwards, it was used to make mourning jewelry and rosaries in Europe. The real heyday of Jett fashion began at the end of the 19th century. Due to its light weight, the material made it possible to produce large pieces of jewelry, as was the fashion at the time. The Great Exhibition of 1851 in London made carvings made of jett, which was mainly mined in Whitby, England, famous worldwide. After Queen Victoria banned the wearing of jewellery (with the exception of jett and pearls) at the English court following the death of Prince Consort Albert in 1861, brooches, necklaces and earrings were considered the most popular mourning jewelry for a relatively long time.
