Description
Two birds have taken up residence in a bed of forget-me-nots. A small wind chime lies on the flowers next to them. This small scene is sculpturally carved from a single piece of salmon red coral. This is so-called Momo coral, which is found off the coast of Taiwan and has inspired artisans in China in particular to create ever new creations. It is not uncommon for the natural shape of the coral to dictate the basic form of the scenes depicted. Here, love has become the theme of the relief, as illustrated by the pair of birds and the forget-me-not flowers. Perhaps the small windmill is a reference to lightness, as everything is known to be easier with love! The coral is mounted on reddish gold on the back and is barely visible from the front. Fine sawing work reveals that the goldsmith's work, as well as the carving of the coral, was done by hand. Coral (shanhu 珊瑚) has a special significance in Chinese culture. It is one of the so-called eight auspicious treasures and symbolises a long life and professional success. In ancient China, coral was believed to be an ‘iron tree’ that grew under the sea and only bloomed every 100 years. The colour of coral made it a popular talisman, as the colour was considered a symbol of luck, wealth and joy in ancient China. All good omens surround the decorative material of our brooch, in which the natural growth form of the coral branch can still be guessed. The scene is skilfully crafted and rich in detail. The brooch is a romantic object that looks particularly beautiful on a blouse or lapel thanks to its colour. The brooch was probably made in Taiwan or China in the second half of the 20th century. It came to us here in Berlin.
