Antique "Retro Style" Earrings with Sapphires & Diamonds, 1940s

Description

In the history of jewellery, earring fashion goes hand in hand with hair fashion. While people still favoured long hanging earrings in the 1920s, which helped to emphasise the new, short bob hairstyles, the ideal had changed by the 1940s. People now wore their hair at least shoulder-length, curled into elaborate waves and never tightly gathered, but at most swept behind the ears. Ear jewellery picked up on this development and the designs themselves became more sculptural and compact. The deliberately cool, sometimes eccentric ideal of beauty of early Art Deco was replaced by a softer, more harmonious ideal. One of the most popular motifs of the decade, primarily in the form of earrings and brooches, were voluminous curves and fanned-out waves. This pair is in keeping with the fashion. Two bands of reddish gold appear to be intertwined, moved by the wind. Diamonds in platinum settings and dark blue sparkling sapphires seem to drip out of them like grapes or flower panicles. Everything sparkles and vibrates in the light. However, the overall shape remains closed and concentrated. The gemstones used here all differ slightly in their cuts and colours. This may be due to the constraints of the time in which the jewellery was created. It can often be observed in jewellery from Europe from those years. Gemstones from older pieces of jewellery were often reused here. The overall impression is nevertheless harmonious and coherent. However, the goldsmith who created the jewellery not only considered the elegance of the front, but also the wearing comfort. Larger clips hold the ear studs from behind to prevent the leaves from tilting on the earlobe. We discovered the earrings in the Rhineland.
