Description
The symbolic act of giving a diamond ring as an engagement gift is first documented in 1477 and can be traced back to Mary of Burgundy, who received a diamond ring as a promise of fidelity from her future husband Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg. Wearing a ring on the left hand as a sign of commitment was already customary among the ancient Egyptians, who believed that the ‘vein of love’ connected the heart to the left ring finger. The classic solitaire ring, i.e. a ring with just one diamond, was popularised by the famous jeweller Tiffany & Co. in 1886. To this day, this form of ring has remained the epitome of the engagement ring: It combines all the symbolism you would expect from a piece of jewellery that is based on a promise. The diamond set in the simple high carat gold ring shines in an old cut. It is slightly cushion-shaped and individually cut. An attempt was made to preserve as much of the rough crystal material as possible. This in no way means that the stone has only been rudimentarily cut, as even the strong round edge of our diamond is faceted. It shines in the colour white (Wesselton, H) and has a few small inclusions. These testify to its naturalness and appear as small flags and fog in the diamond. We have had an independent appraisal created for the diamond, which will be delivered with the ring.
