Antique Platinum Necklace with Sapphire & Diamonds, c. 1915
Description
This necklace shines white, bright and light. Fine bars and loops are made of platinum. They bear shining diamonds and a precious sapphire in the centre of the design. A large, white and very pure drop-cut diamond (0.90 ct, H, vvsi) is suspended below the design. The necklace has a very graphic design. The connecting bars are straight or slightly inwards. They are symmetrically distributed around the central sapphire. Only the two loops at the top appear to be loosely attached to the pendant. The design is therefore very typical of the 1910s, when tastes were increasingly developing towards clear, geometric shapes, from which Art Deco would ultimately emerge as the new fashion. The pendant is made entirely of platinum, which is unusual. Platinum had only been used by goldsmiths for a few years around 1910. It was mostly used as a thin overlay on a gold base, as platinum was still extremely expensive at the beginning of the century, far more expensive than gold. At that time, platinum was mined almost exclusively in Russia, in the Urals. The platinum in this pendant will also have been mined there. Although individual pieces of jewellery made entirely of platinum were created in Paris around 1900, these remained the exception for a long time. This pendant made entirely of platinum is therefore a special treasure. The mounting on the back, which can be unscrewed, is made of yellow gold, while the chain with its clasps was added later and is made of white gold. The chain can be worn in two lengths. We were able to purchase the necklace here in Berlin. An independent expert opinion on the quality of the materials is enclosed with the necklace.
