It was a great sensation when the Japanese entrepreneur Mikimoto succeeded in cultivating saltwater pearls on a large scale in the early 1920s. Until then, pearl necklaces had to be made from naturally grown pearls, so-called ‘orient pearls’, which were about as expensive as diamonds of the same size. It was the invention of the cultured pearl in Japan that made pearl jewellery affordable and triggered a great fashion that has lasted to this day. This necklace consists of two rows of gently gradient, white pearls with a good lustre, as is desirable in Japanese Akoya pearls. They show only slight signs of growth and are all very round. The necklace was created by the renowned Schoeffel company, which was founded in 1921 and still exists today, as the hallmark on the clasp reveals. The pearls are arranged in a gradient. A particularly large pearl forms the centre of each strand, with the subsequent pearls then slightly reducing in diameter up to the clasp. The silver clasp, designed in typical Midcentury style, is set with another white pearl. We date the necklace to the 1950s. The necklace is a classic for ladies of all ages from the masters of pearl jewellery. The piece of jewellery found its way to us here in Berlin.
