Description
When one thinks of coral, the red coral from the Mediterranean may first come to mind. However, many other types of coral were actually found in the vast oceans of the world in the past and used to make jewellery. As early as the late 19th century, for example, white corals arrived in Italy from Japan. These were called "shiro-sango" in Japan and "corallo bianco", i.e. "white coral", in Italy. In previous centuries, only coral from the Mediterranean had been processed in Italy. However, stocks there began to decline and Italian coral carvers looked for ways to sustain their business. The import of white coral was the starting signal for the increasingly extensive search for new coral deposits worldwide in later decades. But initially corallo bianco was the first new coral color on the market. And it sold well, especially in the USA, Great Britain and Germany. In the 1950s it was replaced by the stronger pink angel skin coral from Taiwan. This necklace is made of creamy white coral from Japan. The colour of the individually hand-cut pearls is reminiscent of cream sweets; it is a warm white, which here and there shows slightly yellowish, but sometimes also rosé-coloured sprinkles. Each pearl is individually cut by hand. They are strung in a knotted pattern and have a diameter of up to 1.2 cm. The necklace has an impressive length of 138 cm and can be worn as a sautoir or wrapped around the neck several times. It was created in the years around 1900. It has been restrung more recently. The piece is completed by a box clasp made of gold-plated silver that was renewed in our workshop.
