Description
Gold coins have always been used to make jewellery. This ring made of yellow and red gold presents a coin from Austria. It is a ducat with the double-headed eagle and the profile of Emperor Franz Josef. The ducat was the first internationally accepted means of payment in the world, as its weight and fineness were standardised and bindingly defined very early on. A Nuremberg lamb ducat weighed exactly the same as a ducat of the Republic of Venice or that of the Holy Roman Empire. This meant that it could be traded internationally without any problems. The coinage used here bears the year 1915, which shows that it is an official restrike of the Austrian mint that was produced at a later date. We assume that the ducat and the setting were created around 1950.
