Vintage "Toi-et-Moi" Ring with Ruby & Diamonds in White Gold, c. 1970
Description
As if in a dance, this white gold ring features a pink ruby and a sparkling white brilliant-cut diamond. The juxtaposition of these two protagonists characterises the design as a "toi-et-moi" ring. Designs with two opposing, similar elements, be it two gemstones or pearls, were already very popular in the period around 1900: people loved to play with symbols. In the imagination of the time, two lovers face each other here; recognisable as independent elements, yet firmly connected by their feelings and symbolically united in a piece of jewellery. In the past, these pieces of "you-and-me" jewellery were therefore usually gifts of love. In this ring, the two partners, the brilliant-cut diamond and the ruby, are set in light-coloured white gold. The ruby of around 0.78 ct is a high-quality, untreated, i.e. unheated stone, probably from East Africa. The brilliant-cut diamond of approx. 0.54 ct has very good brilliance and a light, white colour ("Wesselton", H). Both stones have some inclusions in their centre, which testify to their formation in the earth's interior. Other, smaller diamonds are set on the curved ends of the ring shank. We often find Toi-et-moi rings with sapphire and diamond or two diamonds. We were all the more delighted with this ring. Its clear, modern design is typical of a ring created around 1970, which we discovered at Lake Constance.
