Timeless Antique Sapphire & Diamond Ring, c. 1910
Description
‘The sapphire - the gemstone of autumn, blue like the autumn sky - is a symbol of truth, sincerity and constancy. Less vivid than its sibling, the ruby, which stands for burning passion, the sapphire embodies unagitated and storm-tested love; it is therefore particularly well suited to the autumn season, when the fading sun no longer shines with the fiery rays of summer, but with moderate luminosity.’ (George Frederick Kunz: The Curious Lore of Precious Stones, 1913) In the western world, the sapphire is regarded as the birthstone for the month of September, but as the stone of autumn it is also a symbol of loving loyalty. George Frederick Kunz, mineralogist and vice-president of Tiffany & Co., tried to interpret these properties attributed to him in the paragraph quoted above in accordance with the calm, deep blue colour of the gemstone. In this ring, it therefore seems all the more appropriate to set the gemstone between four old-cut diamonds, as the diamond has symbolised eternity since ancient times due to its hardness. The delicate ring holds the gemstones in simple platinum frames, which are decorated with fine milgrain settings. The lower band and the simple ring band, on the other hand, are made from high-carat yellow gold. We date the ring to around 1910 due to its design, style and diamond cuts. It has been beautifully preserved and came to us from Stuttgart.
