In some regions of Germany, heavy necklaces made of faceted amber are part of the typical wedding costume. Especially the Schaumburg region at the foot of the Weserbergland west of Hanover is known for such jewelry, the so-called "Bückeburg wedding chains". But comparable necklaces were also worn in other areas, which can ultimately only be precisely located by their magnificent clasps. The here presented 50.5 cm long necklace consists of large faceted ambers with up to 2.3 centimeters in diameter and together weighing more than 131 grams. The ambers came to us loose and our goldsmiths have restrung them, alternating with gold plated silver elements. The antique ambers have a slightly irregular shape that still suggests the natural shape of the stones, but at the same time they are faceted all around. A modern magnetic clasp makes the necklace uncomplicated to wear. The amber stones presented here are relatively likely the guarded property of a wealthy family from the Schaumburger Land; to us they actually came from the region. Comparative examples, which allow us to date the ambers, can be found in the standard work by Gislind Ritz: Alter bäuerlicher Schmuck, Munich 1978, pp. 73-79.

There are many myths about the origin of amber. One of the most beautiful stories comes from the ancient Greeks, who also came amazingly close to the truth with their narrative. The Heliades, the daughters of the sun god Helios, so it is said, hitched their brother Phaeton without permission the magnificent sun chariot of their father. Phaeton, eager to steer the chariot across the sky, however, overestimated his powers and crashed tragically. After his death, the sisters were turned into poplars out of punishment or pity, as they wept inconsolably for their brother's death. From their golden tears the amber was born.
