Antique Gold Box Pendant with a Diamond Baronial Crown, c. 1900
Antique Gold Box Pendant with a Diamond Baronial Crown, c. 1900
Description
This pendant made from high-carat gold has a round shape, very similar to a pocket watch. Its front is adorned with a crown above the letter ‘I’, both set with glittering diamond roses. It is a seven-pointed crown that illustrates the status of a baroness or baron. If you open the front, you will find a spacious compartment inside the pendant and a small mirror on the inside of the lid. Unfortunately, we do not know what was kept in the pendant, which was made around 1900 in the Netherlands. The pendant is a little too small for powder and the public use of rouge or other cosmetics was frowned upon at the turn of the century. Perhaps pills were kept in the elegant pendant? Or a sponge with perfume? The piece of jewellery combines the useful with the beautiful in an unusual way. Even today, it can still be a practical little helper in many situations.
